PowerPhotos for Mac has archived my full “keep originals" 1.4tb photos for Mac library to both an external SSD + up to my NAS for safe keeping. I am now moving 1.4tb sorted b year JPEGs folder (exported using PowerPhotos) to my NAS for then eventual upload to Amazon Photos. My Lightroom Library …

Photo Backup Project Update since I'm about to close the 2nd full week. Two of SanDisk's 4TB SSDs were DOA or well dead on arrival after accepting my copy of 2.5 terabytes of photos to them. Turns out there's a known issue this week - …

@gene WOOHOOO. Thanks for sharing the updates with all of us. Trip of a lifetime.

Hello from Ivory for MacOS. I think $25 a year for 3 platforms is a fair subscription price. It was $15 for iPad+iPhone.

@geoffoliver hard drives (physical and cloud based) are more fragile than having a physical copy anyway. Having digital content you own edited or pulled without warning is insanity.

Every time a media company makes a decision, it just fuels more people to piracy. Old SNL episodes being cut on Hulu for song-rights or offensive content, Books being pulled from Kindles, Shows disappearing from streaming services and unskippable ads. It’s like media companies (not the artists) …

Not even discounting the technical issues of the new Max App for AppleTV but the overall situation of my annual plan that just renewed losing 4K in 6 months is completely unethical. Will Max allow me to upgrade to 4K (charging me the prorated $50 difference which is $25) in 6 months or just …

Tried launching HBO Max “Something went wrong” Nothing tells me I need to download a new app. Went to HBOMax.com and they have a redirect to max.com which means my 1Password / iCloud Keychain don’t auto-fill. I know why (it’s linked to HBOmax.com domain) but most users don’t. I tried to cancel my …

6 mile hike today.

@oliverames Taken on that trip…I lost a tiny bit of weight since then. Need to lose more! Good to hear from you, Oliver!

@oliverames Imagine how much data we’ll need when we’re 70!!!!

Team Off-site. WOOHOO.

Time for a little scripting. Getting it ready to run headless and pick up a lot of the things my iMac used to do that I disabled when going full laptop.

FYI if you buy a lot of Apple devices, Total Tech is $199 a year. I certainly get my money worth. This doesn’t include my wife’s phone, Mac, AirPods, watch or iPad :P

Thanks to @mjtsai among many others, I took advantage of Amazon’s 20% discount on M2 Mac Minis today and price matched it with BestBuy who, via TotalTech, gives me free AppleCare+ on everything I buy. Apple.com Price on an M2 Mac Mini with AppleCare + Tax = $748. Through Best Buy, it’s $433 …

Great to be back in the office without a sling

@mjtsai I should have made those a blog post. Sorry. This is the post that inspired my project - https://paulstamatiou.com/digital-clutter/

@DarylKiley hi Alyx. Sadly, I just manually export them to a folder once a month. I’ve been doing that for years.

Before I go back to writing, I wanted to link to another account of mine that will remain separate for a while. @dadthoughts. I don’t expect any followers and I’ll boost those posts for really important stuff.

Before anyone asks, I delete 9 out 10 photos I take off my camera. So these are 180,000 GOOD photos taken from 1999-2023 + a few hundred scans of 4x6 prints from when I was a kid my parents had. At this rate, they’re going to bury me with over 1 million photos. My grandkids are gonna be PISSED.

Very last thing I did was download all of my photos from SmugMug, Flickr, Instagram, IMGUR and I had some old archives from Facebook/Twitpic. I de-duped them using PowerPhotos2 and found a few I had uploaded from iPhone but had not stored in iCloud. …anyway, this has been a LOT of work.

Once all of my photos are up in the cloud, I’ll start organizing and cataloguing (by year/month/tags) all of the videos. It’s a LOT. But then I’ll have all of my photos in iCloud + NAS (@ home) + Prime Photos. And I’ll be deleting all videos from iCloud Photos since the most storage Apple will sell …

This project involves at least backing up all images to the cloud. I’m relenting by going through Prime Photos since it’s free as a prime user. Roughly 4 terabytes of photos are uploading to prime now. Thanks to my fiber connection, I’ve uploaded about 1 terabyte of them in 2 days. Local copies of …

My weekend project which is continuing over the next few weeks has been to get my photo storage under control. 1.8 terabytes in iCloud Photos (1TB of which is video) 128,000 JPEGs in iCloud 50,000 RAW (CR2/DNG) files in Lightroom 20 additional terabytes of videos which I created and made a copy up …
